Forget Shorter Showers

Would any sane person think dumpster diving would have stopped Hitler, or that composting would have ended slavery or brought about the eight-hour workday; or that chopping wood and carrying water would have gotten people out of Tsarist prisons; or that dancing around a fire would have helped put in place the Voting Rights Act of 1957 or the Civil Rights Act of 1964?

Then why now, with all the world at stake, do so many people retreat into these entirely personal “solutions”? Why are these solutions not sufficient? But most importantly, what can be done instead to actually stop the murder of the planet?

Part of the problem is that we’ve been victims of a campaign of systematic misdirection. Consumer culture and the capitalist mindset have taught us to substitute acts of personal consumption (or enlightenment) for organized political resistance.

The above text is authored by Derrick Jensen, an activist in true meaning of such word.

The following is an award-winning short movie, its words based on Jensen’s essay of the same title, made by Jordan Brown, an activist as well.

I would encourage readers to take both links presented as there are so many good articles, essays and videos that you can find on both sites.

  1. The video seems to disconnect corporations from individuals so as to shift ‘blame’ or the so-called solutions. Whereas corporations and individuals are interlinked; corporations are run by individuals, and supply to individuals. Sure, if there is no choice but to use the goods and services that are provided by a corporation that acts in a way that is harmful to our planet then nothing will improve, but if ALL individuals live ethically and in a manner that is not harmful to our planet, then the individual will affect change.

    1. You have raised a very good point. It is true that the video seemingly disconnects corporations from individuals and at the same time, those corporations are run by the individuals as we can all notice. Although impersonal, corporation may stand as synonym for immoral and unethical values / goods, that some of “us” humans, the self-appointed elite, powers that be, are pushing to the vast majority of us, the “other” individuals. Yet I think, that the same vast majority of people does not recognize themselves as the victims of those mentioned corporations, so we may be facing double disconnect while looking at the same subject.

It is true, that there is a need to think heavily while looking at the above video or while digesting all similar written or video material, but I think that Derrick (the author of the text, on which the video is made upon) is not making this disconnect on purpose, to misdirect in example. I think that he may be occasionally simply jumping ahead with much more important issues, speeding to proceed to the bigger picture about the message he elaborated within the essay. Then the author of the video made the short essay even more compressed and one viewer may get the impression that the message lacks some more clarity in its essence.

I agree with you up to a point, yet I may be biased – I have long ago noticed the disconnect that appears in our modern society when dealing with abstract and sometimes absurd institutions / terminology, while such institutions / concepts are always (!) run by people, as you have pointed out as well. So, caution is always welcome, thanks for bringing it up.

  2. Turn off the TV, cancel the cable, newspapers, magazine subscriptions, don’t buy their crappy music or books; the way we get to the controllers is through the pocket book. Some of us are doing this – there needs to be more. Of course it’s obvious the controllers are trying to divide all of us through any means necessary, and they know exactly what they are doing; instead of all of us banding together to send a message to the controllers, we are divided into different camps. I guess it’s more important to get unisex bathrooms and define 68 different genders, because God forbid, the world would end if we don’t do this. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could seriously cutback the amount of taxes we pay because we don’t want to fund endless war? Let the oligarchs pay for their senseless wars – they’ve got the trillions. Instead, the ordinary people get bilked each and every day and it’s a joke to say that we have freedom. The joke is on us… try not paying taxes.

    1. P.S. I see that Derrick wrote his piece in 2009 and mentions that An Inconvenient Truth helped raise awareness about climate change. That movie, created by an oligarch, provides MORE misdirection! The controllers have created a whole climate change myth, and all that film did was make phony Al Gore more rich and come up with a new scheme to fill the coffers of the oligarchs: carbon credits. I hope Derrick has had some time to revisit his view of that propaganda. Truthseeker Miles Mathis thinks climate change is a red herring to mask the truth that our resources are dwindling. I’m tired of the word “activist”. It’s so overused. We do need to change individually – the sooner people stop acting out for their own pet projects and stop being consumers of everything, the sooner we may reach a tipping point. It does start with each one of us so I have become an “inner activist”. I’m changing myself from the inside out. I live in a major liberal west coast city – and I’m tired of all the activists acting out! I have to start somewhere so I am starting with me.

      1. Looking at the true data and comparing it to the data presented by Al Gore, one can notice without much effort that he heavily misrepresented and abused science to manipulate the facts for some pervert financial benefit of PTB. What he and his stooges did is not even para-science, it is simply rubbish, charlatan’s approach to try and comprehend / present some serious issues.

But what is obvious and moreover, what can be observed as a natural cycle, is that the weather does change through time – it is not a static phenomenon and it was never like that. We can be assured that as much as we have seasons, that are cyclical in their nature, so it is with the weather as a whole. We can trace colder periods in time as much as warmer periods, where there is a significant connection to the activity of the Sun – in example, last mini ice age was observed in the middle ages and it lasted for a short period, when there was minimal number of Sun spots present on the Sun’s surface, indicating its minimal activity. Humans or no humans present at that particular time, it makes no difference.

But what is very important to know are two things in connection to this : the raising volume of atmospherical CO2 is a consequence of Earth’s warming up and not its cause. Secondly, and even more important to the issue of the scam called “An Inconvenient Truth” is that humans’ addition to the whole CO2 release is up to 4% in total, which is only slightly more than the statistical error in the big picture.

I do not believe Derrick (and the author of the video based mostly on Derrick’s text) is misdirecting on purpose with his mentioning of Al Gore’s scam. As much as it is true, that Al Gore’s interpretations are phony and dishonest, raising people’s awareness about the notion, that we are surely poisoning mother Earth with our “modern” way of life, is not to be blamed for. To be completely honest – Gore’s story got me aware about the mess we are leaving behind ourselves. And it got me thinking “What are my kids going to say when they grow up and see mother Earth destroyed beyond recognition?”. So as much as he and his stooges pushed some pervert economic trend & agenda, it did some good as well – I believe many people got finally aware about the necessity to definitely change something about the wreck-less behavior we have all been manifesting – without even slightly thinking about the consequences of it. I am included in this group, slowly waking up to the real truth in time – up until this day.
